The information on the tombstone is incorrect. According to an old picture of the tombstone it states that the tombstone was erected in 1936 on the 100th anniversary of William McHargue's death by his descendants. Where they got the information for Sarah I have no idea. According to the Rev. War pension records of William McHargue it states, "à...that he died on the sixth day of August in the year eighteen hundred and thirty six leaving a widow who survived him several years, whose maiden name was Sarah McBroom, who was the mother of this declarant and who died on the 12th day of June in the year eighteen hundred and forty two, that she did not again intermarry but died being the widow of the said William McHargue." In addition, there is a letter that was certified by the county clerk in June 1850 that states the following, "...it was satisfactorily proven before said court by the exhibition of credible testimony that William McHargue late a revolutionary pensioner of the United States at the rate of $40. per annum died on the 6th day of August in the year eighteen hundred thirty six leaving a widow named Sarah McHargue who did not intermarry again but died being his widow that her death occurred on the 12th day of June in the year eighteen hundred and forty two" And also, "On the 12th day of May 1841 personally appeared before the undersigned àà..Sarah McHargue a resident on Robinson creek, in the county of Laurel and state of Kentucky aged ninety one years upon the 19th of January last past (Jan 1841)à" |
